Otherwise there is no point in modding for a first time play-through. Also if you are using the steam version there is a map patch mod that fixes some issues. Has your friend played it before? Otherwise what does he have against playing Vanilla?īut honestly to play the vanilla game best on modern hardware, Dx10 patch mod, but I would not recommend fiddling with the added settings unless you want to use a texture pack. Don't get me wrong, there actually is some interesting art direction and a few areas are brand new and represent the complete re-working that the mod was supposed to be, but even in that case, it wouldn't be the mod you get to experience Deus Ex as it was intended. Some areas are barely touched, while others are changed for the worse (locations on the map conflict with NPC-given directions, the level pathways are altered to upset the original balance, extraneous areas tease the player with no payoff, etc).

If after a few playthroughs of vanilla/GMDX someone wants to see what the Revision guys tried to accomplish, cool, but it's really not a 'complete overhaul', nor frankly does it preserve the 'visceral core' of what made Deus Ex great. Revision is not at all what newcomers to Deus Ex should start with, but unfortunately it's what Steam steers them toward (when I first got DX on Steam, all I saw was the New Vision mod!). Notably, the difficulty settings are tuned to appeal to new and veteran players alike - AI are as blind and dumb as Vanilla in Easy, and you're comparatively a walking tank, as compared to Realistic where even returning players will find a challenge in sharp, attentive, and strategic (but not unfair!) AI. It's practically designed to be a newcomer's bridge into enjoying the original, as it incorporates the New Vision and HDTP graphics mods by default and hosts a huge number of improvements to the game, all while retaining all of the design philosophy and aspects which made it brilliant in the first place.Ĭheck out this video series to see what's in store in GMDX.
